Nihilism // Meaning of Life
Week 1 - Nihilism // Meaning of Life
Passage: Romans 12:2
Genesis 1:27, Mark 12:30-31, Matthew 28:18-20
Romans 12:2 – “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Romans 12 calls believers to offer their bodies as a living sacrifice, which means to live a holy lifestyle. In addition to the call to holiness, Romans 12:2 gives followers of Jesus a framework for pursuing that holiness. It says to NOT conform to the pattern of the world and to BE transformed. The two-part process of pursuing holiness involves refraining from worldliness and allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us. Holiness is to be sought and lived by abstaining from anything that is counter to God, and engaging in that which is of God.
1. What are some ways you notice that you have been conformed to the pattern of this world?
2. Are there areas of your life that seem to reflect the world more than Christ?
3. How might you engage with God to allow yourself to be transformed by the Holy Spirit?
4. Are there areas of your life that have been transformed by the Lord?
Nihilism is defined as the rejection of all religious and moral principles, in the belief that life is meaningless. Nihilism posits that life lacks inherent meaning, purpose, or value. It can lead to skepticism, despair, pessimism, and a disbelief in objective truth.
Although we might not identify ourselves as Nihilists, it is surprising how often the nihilism that is perpetuated in culture invades our lives. We can quickly forget our God-given purpose, living as if there is no eternity. Or, we can neglect that God has given value to all humans and act as if He is only able to redeem certain individuals.
1. What does the creation account in Genesis 1:27 tell us about human dignity and value?
2. Do you struggle to believe you have value?
3. How do Jesus’ words in Mark 12:29-31 speak purpose into your life?
4. In what ways has God gifted you to accomplish this purpose?
